With the older systems, is there a key to hold down at startup to get the choice of two
partitions on the hard disk to start up from?


No.

That can only be done on Macs that shipped with built-in USB, AFAIK.

OTOH, Command-Option-Shift-Delete-<number from 0 to 6> will tell your Mac to boot from that specific SCSI ID, but it's a rather cumbersome key combination and it doesn't discriminate between partitions on the SCSI disk...

Does that USB card come with it's own drivers, or does it rely on the Apple drivers? If the latter, you'll need the patched USB installer to make it work on a 3400. You can find it on my website...
