With the older systems, is there a key to hold down at startup to get the choice of two partitions on the hard disk to start up from?
No.
That can only be done on Macs that shipped with built-in USB, AFAIK.

Not even that, the Lombard won't choose when holding the Option key. For PowerBooks, it's the Pismo and on.
