If you have the whole system on floppys you could try reinstalling it. That shouldn't hurt the data.
I tried doing that and I would get errors and the install would abort itself.

Apple has a 500 series service manual available for DL. Shows takeapart
procedures, troubleshooting, etc.
I'll have to look that up, just in case I run into anymore problems
