The internal modem's connector only supports a modem. The signal lines just aren't there to turn it into an ethernet port. Well, I suppose it'd be _possible_ to devise some sort of card that appeared to the 'Book as a modem, and do sort of a serial-ethernet translation thing, but that's not a trivial enterprise.
