Hi How are you using the drive

A. as a single drive connected to the ide of the 2300.
B. as a dual drive connected to the ide of the 2300 with a drive connected to the scsi of the 2300. C. connected to the ide side of the scsi to ide adapter connected to the scsi side of the duo

If you are trying to boot using A. then the master on the cf has to be set. If you are trying B. then the master of the cf needs to be set but the master of the scsi adapter card does not.
If you are Trying C. Then both masters need to be set.
Each time i booted i made sure that the OS on the Cf card was an exact match of the previous drive So for the 2300 i copied the drive in a 5300 putting the drive in a cf to pcmcia adapter then when copied I connected it to the 2300 worked fine.

for the duo 230 i copied the drive by putting the scsi drive in an external case and connecting it to the scsi of the 5300 copied the drive to a compact flash and the put the duo 230 back together again putting the cf in place of the hdd again booted fine..

I suppose i cheated really because at no time did i try to boot the Books from a blank unformatted cf with another drive connected ( like a floppy or cd)

I will try to do it with a blank cf this afternoon and then send the results back with a how to when i get it going (fingers crossed)

Ok, i've done all these steps, but the thing doesn't work....
I've also disassembled a duo 2300c and installed the ide-cf adapter to see if it works, but it seems that i've found further problems: it doesn't boot from a floppy!!! I've tried 8.0 install disk 2, but crashes while loading the finder, showing "error 41"... then reboot: the floppy has been someway corrupted!
Any ideas?
The cf card is pc-formatted, so maybe this can be a problem with duo 210, but i'm quite surprised of the 2300c booting problems!
