Last weekend, I decided update to OS 9.2.2 using OS9 helper. I had some problems getting a download of the 9.2.1 updater that would work, but once I got past that, the 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates went smoothly, or so I thought.
Unfortunately I've now got three problems, which may or may not be related to each other, that did not exist before the updates.
1. The shutdown process freezes the computer after closing windows, quitting applications (if any are running) and erasing desktop icons but before blanking the screen. This freeze does not occur on restarts. The only way I can completely power down is to turn off the plug strip to which the computer is connected.
2. The second problem primarily involves Eudora 6.1, but has also been seen at least once involving Netscape. When I close a Eudora window (i.e. mailbox, message), the icons that were one the screen behind it have disappeared. They can be made to reappear by selecting the area of the screen where they are located, clicking on each spot where one is located or if they are inside a window by windowshading and then unwindowshading. There seems to be some connection between the time the Eudora window is open and the icon disappearances but it is not consistent. Sometimes nothing happens. But I have also seen the opening splash box for Eudora cause icons to disappear when Eudora took longer than usual to start. At least once, when I closed a Netscape window the icons behind it were gone, although it is possible I had been using Eudora while the Netscape window remained open behind it. I have not seen the problem with Internet Explorer or Opera.
3. The third problem has only begun within the past day or so. Eudora is in my startup folder and usually starts right up. But I've started to get occasional messages that it has shut down due to error 1. Twice after seeing the message, I tried to use Sherlock 2 and got a message about an address error. Reboot and everything works.
I've trashed some preference files and done a little experimenting with deactivating extensions, but haven't found a cure. I'd welcome any ideas.
