Thanks to all who offered their thoughts on my problems with OS 9.2.2 on a G-3 upgraded PowerWave. My solution, which seems to have cleared up the no-shut-down and disappearing-icon problems, was a clean install of OS 9.0.4 (the latest OS disk I have) and immediate upgrade to 9.1.

However, apparently being one of the tinkers that RHB says populate this list (not to mention a list newbie), I couldn't leave it alone. To solve a previously unmentioned fickleness of my firewire HD in 9.1 (the reason I tried 9.2.2), I replaced the Firewire extensions with those from 9.2.2.

So far it seems to have worked. Thanks again for the suggestions and comments.
