Karl re: OS 9.2 I can confirm that OS 9.2 works fine with a G3 chip, even if not deemed necessary by Apple for pre-G4 machines either with or without OSX. I believe there was a thread here a while back which pointed to several advantages of doing so.
Having said that, the symptoms stated are kinda weird. If dumping the finder prefs, rebuilding the desktop and maybe running Diskwarrior don't settle down the ghosting problems, a clean OS install may be worthwhile. I'm still using Eudora Lite 3.3 on an 800 mHz B&W with OS 9.2.
