Palo Verde experienced similar elevated probe pusher dose rates and increased 
contamination levels on S/G eddy current filtration units.  As with Cook, we 
tried other methods such as the River Technology HEPA filter system.  We 
determined that as the probes traverse through the tubes they wear in such a 
manner as to create very fine particulates.  These wear products combine with 
the high levels of contamination inside the tubes and produce elevated dose 
rates and contamination levels.  One of our technically savvy Decon staff 
members designed a water impingement unit (patent pending) that is very 
effective at removing this combination of material.  When the activity in the 
unit's water tank  builds up we drain it directly to the liquid radwaste system 
and process it through normal plant systems.  This has helped us reduce the 
number of highly radioactive filters that we have had to deal with.
