Subject: Powernet: TSI Portacount

Seabrook Station recently sent a Portacount respirator fit test device to the
vendor for calibration and it was found to be out of the vendor's standard
tolerance of ±15%. So, we are benchmarking to understand how others maintain
Portacount devices and are asking if you would please answer 4-benchmark
questions?

BENCHMARK QUESTIONS
If you use TSI Portacount devices to perform respirator fit testing;

1. How frequently do you calibrate your Portacount device?
Yearly.

Why?
Because? We've always done it that way? (I "think" that TSI recommends annual
calibration. In any event our program procedure specifies annual calibration.
THAT requirement was put into the procedure a long long time ago, in a galaxy
far far away............ probably "because we calibrate everything else
annually"......?)

2. What is your minimum overall fit factor?
1000 for Full face, 100 for half face.

3. Do you add margin to your minimum overall fit factor in the event that
the Portacount as-found condition is outside the vendor tolerance?
No
If so, what is the margin?
Not applicable.

4. What actions do you take if your Portacount device as-found condition
is outside the ±15% vendor standard tolerance?
We have never seen this. It would be a Case by Case Basis evaluation of the
facts. Would write a Corrective Action Document. If the deviation is
conservative there would be no further action. For Non Conservative results,
we would evaluate the fit testing history to look for trends and determine if
retesting would be required. Action taken or not taken would be listed in the
Corrective Action Document response (and of course appropriate technical
justification for the decision made would need to be included. For example, if
a person was recently fit tested, and had a similar fit factor to his or her
previous personal history, no action might be justified.)
