You might want to try again with a throttle command. Add a line to 
<prime.ini> such as <Throttle=100> and see if that doesn't let Prime95 
continue without turning your machine into a space heater. The number 
represents the number of microseconds Prime95 stays idle after each 
iteration.

It took some experimentation, but I've found the right throttle rate for 
each system (with a variable speed fan) to prevent the fan from 
switching to its highest speed. This makes a big difference in laptops 
especially.

Part of my motivation for running Prime95 (or mprime, now that I've 
mostly moved to Linux) is to hold the CPU temperature nearly constant 
despite changes in (non-prime) load. To do so I have to throttle back a 
bit, as other applications don't heat the CPU as much, leading to 
*reduced* power consumption and heat as the load increases.
