A computer case has a lot of stuff between it and the fan, including wires and cards. Many times, fans just end up creating a vortex of air through the fan and the nearby vent holes, without necessarily crossing the hot processor. By putting the fans in series, espically one in the front and one in the back, actually creates a flow through the case and across the heat sinks. It worked for me, and thats why I put it all under "lessons learned".
