That's because the PPD file defaults to 'Letter' paper size (rant rant). What is the contents type if the file; if its not postscript the print system filters have probably tried to convert it to ps and then printed the result of that conversion. You probably need to make the q handle raw data, but then I'm no sure it will work through foomatics so it wouldn't handle the media option, etc (Norm?).
