I'm not really familiar with the term "ramping"... I think you are referring
to the variable f-stop zoom.   Yeah, since you set the f-stop on the camera
body nowadays (a hard thing for an old guy to get used to) you don't have to
worry about the aperture changing when you zoom.   I used to avoid variable
f-stop lenses like the plague since I was always shooting on manual with a
bunch of monolight strobes set up... changing the zoom would require
shooting another Polaroid... but now it's no problem.
