I'm sure that you are on the right track here but I think you need to be careful with UV which is very energetic & may cause damage.

I recall that an archeological dig near Hadrian's wall retrieved a number of fine wooden slips with day to to day admin notes (like "here is your fresh underwear"). These were barely legible when recovered but totally black a few hours later. A university copied them with IR & had excellent results.

I'm sorry that I can't recall more detail.
