Daniel
It's possibly the most used filter in Photoshop and yet has been neglected
in every upgrade that I can think of. I have tried to lead a single-handed
campaign to have it upgraded to include the workarounds that people are
using (some of which Thomas Holm has mentioned) but to no avail .
Complaining or requesting a feature on any list, apart from the Adobe
features list (beware of the Alsatians guarding he way!) and the features
request form on their website, and perhaps the NAPP site, is a fruitless
exercise. All you will get is, "me too" posts.
I think some Adobe bods joined this list a while back but I don't recall
them posting lately, I suspect they left because of all the off-topic posts
and the unsub posts. <g> The beta testers have minimal influence. If you can
bend the ears of an alpha tester, you're more likely to get results -
although it's by no means guaranteed.
For the USM to really sparkle, as well as having the current controls, you
need to be able to select a channel, find edges (with an inversion option),
select a blend mode, highpass mode (!) and control over the halo's tone
(including split sliders to make the transition smoother) and a save
settings (a l SfW) that you can call on from a popup menu. The filter could
easily be split into two levels: current and advanced mode.
Ideally, it should work on a non-destructive USM layer (a l Blend If) that
you can reduce the opacity of or turn off altogether or delete or
double-click to change the settings. But more importantly, it should be
included in Photoshop 8.0 and not 9.0, which will probably not come out till
April 2005.
So, if you care, join the campaign by submitting your wish on the features
request form on the Adobe website...and sharpen those workarounds in the
meantime. <g>
