Ideally, it should work on a non-destructive USM layer (a l� Blend If) that you can reduce the opacity of or turn off altogether or delete or double-click to change the settings.

Those on PC's may wish to look at 'Ultra Sharpen'. This is a plug in for PhotoShop which allows a lot of creative control and is an excellent additional weapon in one's armoury!
