The scanner was set to ID 6

I checked this, the SCSI and RAID controllers are listed, and there is no
yellow! warning.  Expanding the SCSI Raid controllers shows;

 Tekram DC-395U/UW or DC-315/U PCI Ultra SCSI Host Adapter Ver 3.02

and the properties for that show that the device is working normally

Lee at Bodoni insists this normal and he sees that all the time, so I have
to accept that in the meantime!

Lee said there are no specific recommendations.

The current situation seems to have Lee struggling to figure out what is
going wrong. On Wednesday next week, if Lee or I have not solved the problem
before then, I am taking the scanner and pc to my hardware man in Inverness,
link up with Lee by phone, and try and track down between us why there is a
boot problem.

Many thanks again Richard for your help, if nothing else, at least I have
learned a few things from this problem!
