Slightly off the original topic this, but we seem to have identified a common culprit here, and it seems that they have long held the sword of Damocles.
Printers seem to have everyone running scared with threats of print deadlines, the amounts of money they get paid for what many of them treat as an automated process, and the fact that as the last part of the process they have the power to completely bugger-up the job when it is too late to do much about it. I know many book editors/designers, and I have never quite understood how printers have the nerve to charge for colour corrections when they are using 'tame' repro-houses and have trannies as proofs. One one memorable occasion a pantone colour was specified and it came out a different colour on every sheet.
