Glyn,
Regarding your observations:
1 The friends I do it for usually have some of their tricks to share with me (e.g. helping me with fixing my car or something like that). Also, they are mainly enthusiast photographers with their profession in a different field, and a different way of earning money. Also, they are usually not interested in the 'down & dirty' tricks. What I show them usually doesn't go beyond what's written in the Photoshop books already anyway.
2 Sorry - misunderstanding: He did pay me for my recent efforts (even though it wasn't much: $90 for a 7-hour assistance on the last wedding we did together). He also acknowledged that I am now in a different position, being self-emplyed, and that I need to charge regular freelance rates. He knows that he'd have to pay for my consultancy - though I doubt that he'd be happy with a consultancy fee of $60 per hour (if not more!)...
What actually goes on my nerves is the way he generally phrases his questions... by asking me in a casual way just the second before I leave his office and saying "could you come over some day" rather than "Could we make a day or two, so you can teach me some of your knowledge", he's probably trying to manipulate me towards a lower price... (I know a few things about psychology, and I know he's into NLP and that sort of stuff anyway).
The beauty about this list is that it is symbiotic. We gain as much as we put in so I'm happy to divulge my humble knowledge or experience because I get back in return.
Exactly how I see it!
The scenario you describe is quite different. The photographer is definitely using you which would be solved by you getting something back, either full-time employment by him or consultancy rate payment.
What do you reckon would be a fair consultancy rate?
Kind regards Bjorn
