As far as charging a friend or associate, reminds me of another story. A man
owned a grocery store and a friend asked him for a special price on
groceries based only on their friendship. His reply was that all his friends
shopped here and his enemies went elsewhere.

If someone was down on their luck and  wanted groceries for no charge, he
would loan them money and let them purchase the groceries. They understood
the value of money and would repay the loan.
