Seems fair enough then.
What actually goes on my nerves is the way he generally phrases his questions... by asking me in a casual way just the second before I leave his office and saying "could you come over some day" rather than "Could we make a day or two, so you can teach me some of your knowledge",
Yeah, like clients who say "it's only one photograph I want" even though it's taken us 7 years of digital training & thousands of pounds of investment to get that "one photo"!!
What do you reckon would be a fair consultancy rate?
This really does depend on normal business planning, clients per week etc etc but will also depend on how highly you value the knowledge you will impart and what it's worth. Supermodels don't do a hell of a lot of work for say 1/2 days work but if it earns the cosmetics company an extra 10 million then their input value is higher.
Teaching photography or imaging at Uni or college is c**p as they only pay 20.00/hr but to private clients I happily charge 60.00 hr for portfolio crits etc (VAT is not applicable on private tuition where the subject is the same as could be taught in a recognised educational establishment) and for local commercial clients I used to charge 90.00/hr + VAT for advice on using their digital equipment. This is still peanuts compared to the tens of wasted man-hours they would have to commit otherwise, but it's OK for round here!
