You could try repairing permissions with Disk Utility, and restart and run fsck. If you haven't done it already, it's worth a go. As is not letting Norton software anywhere near your Mac...

Hi Paul. Thanks. I have tried all this and thanks to a phonecall from Rod Wynne-Powell tried a few other things all to no avail. It is starting to look like a failing video card. Actually Nortons has rescued a dodgy LaCie hard drive three times (now replaced) and helped me on other occasions. The volume recover has succeeded when everything else hasn't. Mind you I use all my utilities with great caution anyway. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing in my case.
