Regarding your failed CDs:
If you have not already done it, try to read the failed CDs on a variety of
drives.  There are big differences drive to drive.

There is also software that analyzes your CDs to see how reliable they are.
(Actually, it measures % errors found).  Some of the programs will recover bad
CDs.
