Matt,

My own view on this is that it will depend a lot on what you do. The other
key factor is resolution. I use a 20" NEC 2080UX at 1600*1200 and for much
of my work; the size is OK but the resolution could go a touch higher. For
emails, word-processing etc, I tend to find myself using much smaller
portions of the screen.

I personally found the step from 18" (1280*1024) to the 20" (1600*1200)
screen a relief because the extra resolution gave extra room for app
control-panels etc... But it was noticeable how I started to use certain
applications 'maximised' a lot less. I think that I might find a 22" screen
a little too large physically and I doubt that you would gain much in
resolution(???), or maybe I / you would simply sit further away from the
screen?
