Historically, Microsoft has loved, encouraged, and benefited immensely
from the sheep effect. Sorry for them the sheep are starting to see
greener pastures at one or more of the neighboring farms.

Apple is becoming the successful sheep herder, but unlike Microsoft
they've done it by actually releasing high-quality hardware and
software. I don't think people would have bought the iPhone if it hadn't
lived up to being really fracking cool.

Linux will always be a platform for geeks. However, I believe there will
be an exponential increase of numbers of geeks relative to computer
users in general, as it becomes easier to develop useful software with
less formal computer science training.

Linux and open source in general will eventually be ubiquitous, and
competent people will make money developing software for that platform.
For now, there's plenty of money still to be made capitalizing on fear,
uncertainty, and doubt.
