Well - maybe some other might still enjoy perusing this thread - and, as
you can see - I changed the name to make some Important people happy!
:-)

Considering what you are looking to do - it sounds like you want to make
things on a BIG Scale. Check out the Horse head at this link:

es

And - a little ways down on THIS Page - you will see one of the
Co-Founders of MakerBot Industries holding the head - to help give you
some idea of Scale ( I believe Bre is actually 6 foot tall):

I hear you about so little time - I'm in the same boat.

There is this thing called Catch3D - its by Autodesk. Its some kinda
service. Supposedly you can upload pictures - and it will give you back
a 3D model file. Also, as previously mentioned - you might want to check
Thingiverse.com for premade models.

What you describe that you are looking to make - its kinda what I
figured you were looking to do. Making various scenery for train sets.

I've also had some experience of creating something on my Bot (drink
coasters) and then making a mold (silicon rubber) and producing copies
(liquids mixed together that harden into plastic).

There may be others on the web who have done similar to what you are
looking to do - and maybe you could also get more pointers that way.

for Review...

I don't know whether others think this topic should go off limits but I
will
respond until I get complaints.

For my Trains project I want to simulate stone walls for tunnel
entrances,
rock cliffs, wood siding for buildings, stairs, windows and doors among
other things. In short anything in the real world that will be
reproduced in
miniature. There are hundreds of pictures, etc. available that can be
used
to create CAD files. The main problem is that 99% of commercial model RR

kits are meant to be used indoors. I need things to be weatherproofed.

I need to make master molds and then reproduce them in various molding
media
like resin or cement. It would not be practical to make entire
structures
with 3D printing since I need more than one and each would require a lot
of
design effort to get them ready for printing. It would be easier to make

components that would be assembled into complete structures.

I am in a quandary deciding which way to go. To make masters there are
dozens if not hundreds of DIY, bench top, material working machines
including milling machines, lathes, engravers and combination machines
like
lathes with milling. Some with CNC and others manual.

On eBay I saw an XY engraving machine model 3020 that looks promising.
It is
around $700 and takes output from CAD programs running on a PC.

I already own a mini table saw for accurate cutting of thin strips of
plastic to make RR ties and a disk sander to grind rail for making my
own
turnouts/switches.

Another feature I would like is a tracing tool to reverse engineer a
part
and create a CAD file that can be run to duplicate the part.

So much to learn, so little time.
