Oops, I was sloppy and missed that linux was involved. Under linux you're probably at the mercy of the installed handlers for MIME types and whatever overrides have been installed.
See https://wiki.debian.org/MimeTypesSupport (and linked pages) for example, for the basics, then something like https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/default_applications for how that might play out, in terms of config files.
