Indeed, the sorting is done currently for the full subfield value. The good news is that we are about to introduce a new Invenio module called BibSort that will allow for flexible sorting rules and that will result in much faster on-the-fly sorting (due to pre-sorted buckets). So this is perfect timing to think of all the possible sorting needs we all have, like the one you mention. Please don't hesitate to send to the list your concrete sorting use cases and requirements.
