It depends on what version of PT you want, you can get a good copy of PT 9 from Ebay for around $200, the newest PT 11 will run around $400 $500 and less if you have an instatutional student discount. Also, yes that set up would work, my Church is using the Apollo quad with PT 11 and the mackie control is being used by quite a few on PT. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Smart" <csma...@cogeco.ca>

Thanks for that. Not as expensive as I had thought! How about the cost of ProTools itself?

And, could someone use say, a UA Apollo interface, and then pick a control surface, say a Mackie Control?

Hello Chris, I use a 2011 Imac with an external 1TB. My interface is now a Digi 003, it was a Digi 002. The Imacs from that year and even 20012/2013 can run from $800 to $1300. As I have said before a good friend of mine has completed maybe a dozen or so projects for clients using a 2011 Mac mini quad core I5 and using a Digi 002 interface/ control surface. Those minies can be found for around $400 to $600 and for the new I7's, around a grand. The 002 goes for about $250 or so right now on Ebay. The mac model that you choos is really up in the aire, I would think that anything with an I5 or newer will suit your needs as a start up rig, at least 4 GB ram and quad core. I am sure others will chime in, and after protools 9, the interfaces used with PT no longer have to be strickly avid.

Hi folks.

I'm currently a Windows 7/Sonar/CakeTalking user. I don't record bands, but I do mix and master. My playback chain is super simple: computer > S/PDIF > Mytek DAC > powered monitors.

With ProTools a lot more accessible now, how much would it cost to switch over?

I'd need a Mac. Would an iMac with a second hard drive be enough horsepower or are most of you using Mac Pro's?

Does ProTools still require it be used with certain audio i/o hardware?

What control surface are you guys using?

I don't have any money currently, but if funds allow in future, I'd like to have a good idea what it would cost me to switch over.

thanks

Chris
