Phil replied: already spent quite a bit on this laptop, smile. Put in a
Samsung solid-state Evo and 16GB of RAM. Currently running the audio on an
external USB3 drive although long term will most likely move that to a
thunderbolt drive.

Ricky wrote: I have a 2000 1215 inch and I have a 500 gig hard drive. I took
that out and use a hybrid drive but they sell a solid-state for around $300
you could get a three or 4 TB to go in there. When I track I have an
external hard drive but I have used the internal with no plug-ins tracking a
session and never crashed just with my hybrid hard drive. You can really
make that laptop a hot rod for three or 400 bucks run your Boot Camp, have
your ProTools and all that good stuff. This will help you make the decision
on how much you want to try the Apple platform. I would have a logic
installed as well because I believe you like to experiment as I do.

Phil replied: correct. Am sure I will purchase Logic at some point. In the
mean time, just purchased the Samplitude Pro X2 Suite for use on the Windows
platform. There's a guy over here in the UK creating a very cool
accessibility solution for it. We think we will probably be able to get per
track spectral editing going which would be fantastic. BTW, if any of you
on here use clip gain then using Samplitude is like that on steroids as you
can add any affect you like and it's all non destructive.

the set up like I have described max out your RAM as well when you do this
upgrade.

Phil replied: well either on the Mac or Windows side it's all running suite
here.

The advantage of removing the DVD drive is so you can have two internal Hard
drives. this can come in handy when traveling as Pro tools usually requires
you to record to an separate HD than your system drive and that way you have
two drives internally and won't have to bring an external USB or etc drive.
Or just to have a separate OS on each drive.

Gord. You don't need to remove the DVD drive. You may need to fit a larger
hard drive and build a Mac installer. That's easy enough to do using
command line tools. Just use the bootcamp manager to partition the disk for
you. Doing that here with my Samsung EVO 500GB drive in this mid 2012 15
inch MacBook Pro.

I might give this serious fault. My
macbook pro is 4 years old now. If I ever get a newer mac, it will be a
tower system, not a laptop. I could care less about the new features in el
capitan. I would rather have pt working the way it should. Maverick solved
some of the accessibility problems with pro tools not reading certain
numeric values and the like. And apple still hasn't made the midi studio
accessible. If I removed the Dvd drive, I could put in a second HD and run
boot camp to switch between the os's if I wanted to.

I am running ProTools 12 and Mavericks. I had problem with Yosemite and had
to roll back. All of that stuff works well with the latest version of logic
as well on those older operating systems. I am not going to upgrade myself
out of house and home I have thisDAW Running well I am going to keep it that
way. I have a nice quick hard drive in the old laptop I have my CD drive I
have no interest in a newer Apple Computer.

Hi Gordon I believe if you took your laptop in and have it rolled back to
Mavericks or Yosemite your problem would be solved. If there is an issue
that you need the newer update I understand but it may be cheaper and I know
there is no learning curve there. I use my Presonus studio live for my
console. It will not support El Capitan as well. I just bought a control
surface and mackie MCU pro may not support it as well. I have heard that it
did run with El Capitan.
I am not going to take that chance. But all those surface issues you
mentioned could be solved by abandoning El Capitan.

Back when I was running pt 10 with the older os's mountain lion etc., I had
it working great with my alesis master control audio interface/control
surface. Now alesis is no longer supporting it with el capitan. I don't
think my m-audio project mix or the behringer bcf2000 will work either. Are
we relegated to having to buy the Avid artist series surface? Would that be
good enough or do we really need to spring for the s3.
