Putting in a 2nd Drive is no big deal, and fairly inexpensive. Lots of people perform the task themselves, but even if you use a third-party such as simply Mac, it will still only cost you a few hundred dollars. This is assuming you want to go for something like a 256 SSD. Eventually I will do this with my MacBook pro, but for the time being I use a highly rated thunderbolt Drive. I was able to get a good deal on eBay on one which was brand-new, one terabyte for about $200. Still I am going to add an additional SSD, but I don't consider my money to be lost on the thunderbolt Drive anyhow as at that point I will use it simply for storage and backup. Seems like we have a different opinion of the MacBook Pro. For me, having the mobility and power have been great, though I would not want to go with one of the newer ones which are more of a headache to upgrade or change anything out on. By the way, the battery problem you had is pretty common. Folks argue that if you leave it plugged in it don't make a difference and all of that, but definitely not the case. Our I T guy here at the University had the same thing happened to him, and the battery swelled up and started pushing the case apart.
