With regard to the battery, that doesn't sound good. Don't remember Gord
saying anything about that. Agree though about the portability side of this
and adding RAM etc to slightly older MacBook Pro's. Love my mid 2012 15
inch I7 2.7 ghZ.

Putting in a 2nd Drive is no big deal, and fairly inexpensive. Lots of
people perform the task themselves, but even if you use a third-party such
as simply Mac, it will still only cost you a few hundred dollars. This is
assuming you want to go for something like a 256 SSD. Eventually I will do
this with my MacBook pro, but for the time being I use a highly rated
thunderbolt Drive. I was able to get a good deal on eBay on one which was
brand-new, one terabyte for about $200. Still I am going to add an
additional SSD, but I don't consider my money to be lost on the thunderbolt
Drive anyhow as at that point I will use it simply for storage and backup.
Seems like we have a different opinion of the MacBook Pro. For me, having
the mobility and power have been great, though I would not want to go with
one of the newer ones which are more of a headache to upgrade or change
anything out on.

By the way, the battery problem you had is pretty common. Folks argue that
if you leave it plugged in it don't make a difference and all of that, but
definitely not the case. Our I T guy here at the University had the same
thing happened to him, and the battery swelled up and started pushing the
case apart.

As for the control surface I have nothing to offer, I have hung on Yosemite
and ProTools 12.5.

Gord. You don't need to remove the DVD drive. You may need to fit a larger
hard drive and build a Mac installer. That's easy enough to do using
command line tools. Just use the bootcamp manager to partition the disk for
you. Doing that here with my Samsung EVO 500GB drive in this mid 2012 15
inch MacBook Pro.

I might give this serious fault. My
macbook pro is 4 years old now. If I ever get a newer mac, it will be a
tower system, not a laptop. I could care less about the new features in el
capitan. I would rather have pt working the way it should. Maverick solved
some of the accessibility problems with pro tools not reading certain
numeric values and the like. And apple still hasn't made the midi studio
accessible. If I removed the Dvd drive, I could put in a second HD and run
boot camp to switch between the os's if I wanted to.

I am running ProTools 12 and Mavericks. I had problem with Yosemite and had
to roll back. All of that stuff works well with the latest version of logic
as well on those older operating systems. I am not going to upgrade myself
out of house and home I have thisDAW Running well I am going to keep it that
way. I have a nice quick hard drive in the old laptop I have my CD drive I
have no interest in a newer Apple Computer.

yossemity would be as far back as you could go.

Hi Gordon I believe if you took your laptop in and have it rolled back to
Mavericks or Yosemite your problem would be solved. If there is an issue
that you need the newer update I understand but it may be cheaper and I know
there is no learning curve there. I use my Presonus studio live for my
console. It will not support El Capitan as well. I just bought a control
surface and mackie MCU pro may not support it as well. I have heard that it
did run with El Capitan.
I am not going to take that chance. But all those surface issues you
mentioned could be solved by abandoning El Capitan.

Back when I was running pt 10 with the older os's mountain lion etc., I had
it working great with my alesis master control audio interface/control
surface. Now alesis is no longer supporting it with el capitan. I don't
think my m-audio project mix or the behringer bcf2000 will work either. Are
we relegated to having to buy the Avid artist series surface? Would that be
good enough or do we really need to spring for the s3.
