Yes, but waht about the Overwrite feature on the PTR1--the one using Recording Pause, and backing up to find the cuts in question that you want to record over? Must you be in Insert or Punch-In mode to use this feature?
Thanks.

Daveed,

No, Overwrite mode is quite different. Insert mode on the PTR1 will not
delete any data but Overwrite mode on the PRS software will most definitely
wipe out data.

I think if you re-read my last message carefully, it is fairly clear what
each of the functions do.

You are quite right that there is some level of confusion - it took me some
time to work it out. Perhaps the short summary below might help:

Insert mode on the PTR1 will insert audio just like inserting text in a word
processor i.e. it moves everything over to make room for the new audio.

Punch in on the PTR1 allows you to specify the phrases that you want the new
audio to replace.

Overwrite on the PRS will automatically delete from your selected position
to the end of the current section without having to specify any phrases

Punch in on the PRS includes features which allow you to do the equivalent
of both "Insert" and "Punch in" on the PTR1.

You could think of the PRS as having 3 ways of recording i.e. overwrite,
punch in and insert. The confusing thing is that to use the insert feature,
you have to activate the "punch in" feature and then choose to not delete
anything when recording.

Hope this helps.

Actually both the recorder and the software. In the recorder, there is a third overwrite mode, used with recording pause. in the software, I think Overwrite is the same as Insert. Is that write? Plextor realy needs to rewrite its documentation! Thanks for the clarification. --Daveed--

Daveed,

Are you talking about the PTR1 or the PRS software?

A quick explanation:

PTR1:
On the PTR1 the terms used are "Insert" and "Punch-In". Insert means what
it sounds like i.e. when you select a position in your audio and start
recording, the new audio will be inserted into the existing audio at the
location specified. No deletion will occur.
The "Punch in" mode allows you to specify a group of phrases that will be
replaced with the new audio. This can be as little as a single phrase up
to
the whole of the original recording.

PRS:
There has been some confusion over the fact that different terminology is
used in the PTR1 and the PRS. On the PRS the two phrases used are
"Overwrite" and "Punch in". This can be quite confusing, however, I'll
try
to clarify things. Overwrite means that the new recording will completely
overwrite the section you are focussed on from the highlighted phrase to
the
end of that section. You do not need to specify particular phrases apart
from the starting point, it will assume that everything else in the
section
is to be deleted and replaced with the new audio. The confusion is the
use
of the "Punch in" option. This can be used to either insert audio (as in
the PTR1 or can be used to behave like the punch in facility on the PTR1.
The thing that decides which way you want to use this facility is in the
dialogue box that appears when you go into recording pause mode. In the
list of phrases displayed, the top item is "Nothing". If you leave this
selected, "Punch in" will act like the insert mode. If you specify any or
all of the phrases in the list, "Punch in" will behave like the punch in
facility on the PTR1.

I know that is a bit confusing but I assure you that this all works.

Hope this helps.

Jamie

Subject: Overwrite Mode

While making rec ordings of voice tracks and other narrative material, I and my readers have been grappling with Insert, Punch-in and Overwrite modes. When using Overwrite, and one wants to go back and record over a mistake, can one simply continue recording from that passage? I like the fact that you can pause the recording and simply rewind a few phrases and quickly cut in and record over the mistake.

My readers are still confused about Punch-in versus Insert modes.

In a studio setting, we have been able to produce very professional
recordings with no discernible clicks when correcting errors or adding to
recordings.
Of course, using broadcast-quality microphones helps, too.

My only big cvomplaints about the Plextalk is its inability to allow for
knowing and
determining time increments in a specific passage, rather than a complete
title--and its
rather short battery life--a problem for a broadcast journalist in the
field without the possibility of
plugging the unit into a power outlet. Other than those concerns, it's a
great unit, and my
sighted colleagues appear to admire it.
