Frankly: if you *really need* topology you should stick to grass.
Shapefiles are not
the right way to go IMHO.
Well, in "real life", i have no influence on what kind of data I'm
penetrated with. But cleaning shapes with v.in.org + advanced options most
of the time does the trick, and thereafter, shapesfiles are *ok* again.
