I used to Dabble a little using Dark Basic Professional, a rather nice Gui
front end Basic mainly aimed at writing 'games'.
A couple of my friends teenage boys enjoyed messing with it as it was very easy

Not quite what I was aiming at. It looks like a fun, Windows-only games
programming environment.
The aim of my idea is cross-platform and aimed at training programming and being
a tool for mostly non-computer literate scientists.
I envisage being able to run the interpreter in a non-interactive mode, possibly
even in an advanced mode utilising the C pre-processor etc.
