Well every approach has it's pros and cons. What you propose is the way
Basecamp does it. Handling large
databases with BaseCamp isn't that much fun the last time I tried it. You
outsource the problem to the file
system again, by having several smaller databases.

For me the database is just another source of data like files and devices. With
the advantage of a file
system like structure and avoiding copies. It's not part of the workspace. In
fact I always try to have as few
items as possible on the workspace. I use the database to switch items on and
off. That would involve a lot
of scrolling in a common tree widget. Thus splitting the view simplifies things
for me.

One nice feature would be to create a new database folder right on the
workspace. But for that it would
need that crazy folder selection dialog from QLGT again. Imho that wasn't a
good idea at all.

By the way you can load an item from the database to the workspace and save the
database folder on the
workspace as a gpx right from it's menu. No need to create an extra GPX
project, copy the item and save
the extra project.

And a folder hierarchy would make it a bit hard to change the draw order of
projects on-the-fly. Which is
sometimes quite nice when a large POI collection like Joes Hüttenliste covers
up all tracks.

On our weekend trip I had the chance to connect 3 Garmins to QMS at once. My
friends have - sorry if you
read this - a mess on their devices. But to find the day's track was easy
because I could point and click on
the map and the list of copy targets was just the loaded project from the
database and a 'Other' folder
below it. I was glad that I did not need to find the track in the chaos of the
workspace tree widget and to
perform the copy action in the tree widget.

So I am not really focusing on having large structured lists on the workspace.
