For me hardcopies are nice in two cases. When planning a trip, I often create
variants of an existing track. And after a trip, I upload the tracks from my GPS
device to a folder and then post-process them in an other folder, keeping both
the originals and the modified copies for different purposes. I agree, that this
can be done with the existing functions, e.g. making the first modifications on
the original track and store it in a copy.

My concern, however, is that new users will think that "copy to..." creates a
hardcopy and be confused that modifications applied to the "copy" will affect
the "original". This could be avoided by adding a "clone" option to the "replace
existing" and "do not replace" options in the dialog which appears when you save
a copy for the first time.
