But wouldn't that be answering a dialog every single time I want to copy
an item? I would consider this as very annoying.

Currently the probing is just done half way. It is tested if there is an
item with the same key in the target project on the workspace. If it is
a database project the new element will be added to the database with
the next "save". However if there is an item with the same key in the
database, the item will be just updated. So there is a certain risk of
changing items in the database unintentionally. This could happen for
example if you feed back a navigation track via a device.
