I'm still in the game for crypt. It is unix-standard, widely used, easy to
code and secure. 
The last point is important, even if nobody has read access to the password
field (usually compare access for the user himself and no rights for anyone
else is enough).
And yes, good sysadmins are paranoid ;-))
