Hooray! It works with crypt!

I don't know why I didn't try this earlier, but I was determined to 
replicate Elvis's md5 example in Henning's document. Remember his song? 
"Return to sender, address unknown". Elvis was just ahead of his time!

I'm delighted to have solved this problem. I think that perhaps OpenLDAP 
1.2.11 (which I am using) just does not support md5 as well as OpenLDAP 2.x.

Eric, am I not correct in thinking you are using OpenLDAP 2.x?
