I don't know how else to create an MD5 password. I found slappasswd in 
/usr/local/sbin and started to use it. My assumption is that it is a feature 
of OpenLDAP 2.0.11. There is, apparently a tool - ldappasswd - that will 
change the password field of a user, but I haven't tried that one out yet and 
I don't know what encryption methods it supports. Try looking it up on your 
system.

My intention is to script it so that the output of slappasswd is redirected 
into an ldif that I'm generating on the fly. Something like this will append 
the appropriate line to my temp ldif:

echo userPassword: `/usr/local/sbin/slappasswd -h {md5} -s $PASS` >> 
$LDIF
