Gentoo uses .msildir so they have at "patch" when compiling to change qmail
and vpop to change to that format.  Could that be part of the issue ?  Try
logging in through imap via telnet and see if you get a error message about
the .maildir/Maildir not being found.

Not sure how you've changed your 'new' setup compared to the 'old', but from
what I've seen during a few installs that I've done, your /home/vpopmail
directories should be owned by vpopmail, but the group has always been
"vchkpw".

Also(and someone else should pop in here...), Not sure what that link to
".maildir" is doing in there, unless you have some specialized setup.
