restarted svscan and everything began to work again.

I don't think that changing defaultdelivery like that was a good idea. You should change it back to whatever it was originally. I don't know about gentoo, but on a standard install it's set to './Maildir/'.

I changed it back to :

hawk control # cat /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery
# Uncomment the next line for .forward support
#|dot-forward .forward
#| /var/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox
./.maildir/

Then did a /etc/init.d/svscan restart, tested and everything seems to be working fine

Look at the .qmail-default file for the domain that's causing problems, and make sure it's set to the string you listed above.

hawk control # cat `locate .qmail-default`
| /var/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' delete
| /var/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox
| /var/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox
| /var/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox

I think those are set to what they should be.
