First of all, I apologize that the subject matter was really off- topic as it had little to do with QRP activities. But I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. While I knew this concept was much too simple to be unique, I had no idea that Doug Hendricks had passed it along to the folks in Newington so long ago.
Oddly, I think we are all about to see an interesting analogy played out on a major scale.
New Orleans is undoubtedly going to be rebuilt, despite the fact that locating a major metropolitan area 10 feet below sea-level while the ocean rages on one side, a lake sits on another side and a major river flows on a third side is a bit of maniacal arrogance. Sort of a modern day Tower of Babel project. But these facts won't matter. There will be enough emotional energy to do this at any cost.
In much the same way, local clubs and the ARRL, will continue to believe that youngsters *want* to be ham radio operators but we just aren't getting the message across to them correctly. So they do more planning, reconnoiter, and try again. Expending ever more energy and capital to attract youngsters. This too is a bit of maniacal arrogance. But these facts won't matter. There seems to be enough emotional energy (like 'The Big Project' or seeing the occasional 12 year old Extra class operator on the cover of QST) to do this at any cost.
I think I'll still put these thoughts together on paper and pass them along to everyone who cares to look. If nothing else it will permit me twenty years hence to say "I told you so".... :-)
