Okay, I will reply the best I can. >I have the version without the CD -- the cost was like >$1300 back when it was bought!! (worth less than a >hundred now)
Yes, they were very expensive new. I still say they were very good machines. Maybe you got a lemon, I don't know. >Can't boot on system 7.5.1 or higher! I confess this mystifies me. You should be able to go at least to system 7.6.1, and probably to system 8.1. Are you doing a clean install? Does the PRAM battery have any juice in it? What shape is your hard drive in? >The limit for RAM is 36MB, which should be the same >for both of you guys! Yeah, one slot, maxed out. You know, many power Mac boards will fit these without any adaptation. Just pull the old out, and insert the new (no, I haven't tried it. Maybe it wouldn't work, but it seems like it should). Then you would have your power processor, and up to 64 MB of RAM. The 6200 series, the 5200 all-in-one series, and I am sure more would work. Just a thought. >The only reason why your PowerMacs would be going any >slower is that they're emulating 68k code Yeah, probably, because I like to run 68k programs on my older Macs. Anyway, I think you should be able to get quality service from your Performa 636. They were awesome machines, and I really think you can work around any problems you are having. You may have to replace a hard drive or something else, but you should be able to work something out. Good luck! Chuck -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
