Quadlist, but the truth of the matter is I haven't tried hooking up to the 476. I own an eMac, a 7100 and a 476. Eventually, I'd like to have all them sharing the DSL so I know I'll need a router. Needless to say the modem works on the eMac. I moved the modem from one machine to the other just to see if I could get a connection. Just to let you know, I base a lot of my reasoning on the archives at LEM, therefore the 7100 has OS 8.5.1, any reason other than OT 2.0.x to upgrade to 8.6? Tell me to jump and I'll jump. ;-)
I'm on cable, never used asdl which may be different. Just plugging a cable modem from one machine to another will do nothing in all except the machine it started the power cycle in. To change You must unplug the power from the modem for a count of 20. Flicking the switch doesn't work.
4400/7220 here runs 8.6 and works well with only 48mb, I'd suggest backing up your 8.5.1 system folder and install 8.6 to see what you think rather than give you my version of things, it would seem that the beige G3's may prefer 8.5.1.
As you have noted we are way OT now, sorry list.
As for the 476, it's open game with OS 7.5.3 (nothing else) and when time permits OS 7.5.5 unless someone says otherwise. Well, IIRC someone already recommended OS 7.6.1. As for the ethernet port, is there any way to test it? All I know is that the green light on the back comes on. I tried doing the ethertalk between the 7100 and the 476 but I don't think I configured it correctly since I couldn't connect to each other. I see a version of TCP/IP on there. I'm open to suggestions. tia -stew
If you dont own 7.6.1 then you dont need it.
testing the ethernet is easy enough, open the appletalk cp. In the "connect via" menu ethernet should be an option, if not the ethernet extenion may not be active.
Are you running OT or mactcp? I'm guessing you have a hub or x-over cable.
Make sure filesharing is active and atleast one mac has something to share, check the appletalk version on the two lower end macs and try to find a update at apple that covers both, not real important but can save some hassels.
