That clause does seem to vary with insurers so you have to check to be sure.

Interestingly on my latest car insurance renewal they have updated the driving
other cars not owned or hired clause so that it now includes the line
"Providing the other car is already insured on a different policy"
Not sure if this is an industry change or just our insurer.
Will try getting a quote to see what they say for short term insurance as per
Jim's suggestion.

I did offer it to him but he has bought another car in the meantime. Have
mailed the second highest bidder as well just in case they were interested.
If I thought an MOT would inflate the value I would do the work but by the
time I insure it to get it to the MOT station (or hire trailers etc) I doubt I
would recoup significantly more money. The other option is to break the car
depending on what the interest in bits may be.
