Hi Paul
I must agree that the speed bus is not the bottleneck here BUT:
1. In an old email from the support of Varasoftware , they assured me
that their application can handle 3 to 4 iSight "PER FW PORT"
2. Connecting the FW port of my DVCAM to a G5 conflicted with a 1TB FW
800 LaCie drive while it did not conflict with earlier laCie models on
FW 400.
3. Connecting several DV boxes (Analog to DV Video converters) never
worked with me when it's from the same manufacturer.
4. Connecting 2 DV boxes from two different manufacturer worked for me
on any application.
5. Up to 2 BMD Capturing cards can now be recognized by applications.
6. A third capture card could added & recognized by the applications
provided that it's from a different manufacturer.
7. Any multiple card setup must be installed on the actual computer
(Expansion chassis do not work in such cases).
Yes I've been trying to build a multichannel ingest system on a single
computer for a couple of years now.

Slightly off-topic -- anyone have experience getting 2 or more DV
sources over firewire at the same time (e.g. a canopus advc 110 and
55 at the same time?) DV requires roughly 25mbps bandwidth per
stream, so in theory FW at 400mbps should be able to handle
multiple streams, but who knows? Assuming one could work around
the DV driver issue, what's a realistic # of DV streams on a
typical mac on FW400? thx!
Hi Michael,
I have this experience with two iSight cams: Both hooked up to the
firewire bus of my PowerBook G4 (10.4.11): forget it. It seems as if
they're in each others way.
Only one of them gives an image, and the "Show Device Settings..."
button in Quartz Composer is inresponsive.
However if I hook them up both to a Lacie PCMCIA to firewire cardbus
adapter it works partially.
One is in full quality and the other is kinda pixellated. What I
also notice is that the one with less quality gives a slightly
higher image than the other when connected to a billboard.
Normally I use one of them on the cardbus adapter and the other on
the laptop's own port. Then both images are of same quality and height
I get the idea there is a one DV stream device limit on a firewire
bus.
They show up named iSight and iSight#2 every time regardless of how
I connect them. Compression on both is set to component video and I
can enable the highest quality checkbox in QC with no apparent
change in video quality.
Below is a partial copy-paste from the system profiler FireWire List
wich shows they're identical in respect to firmware.
The sum in activity of Windowserver and QC rev up my cpu to approx.
60% with the QC viewer window fullscreen.
So maybe giving your mac an additional firewire port via an adaptor
card can solve your problem.
Now what I'd like to know form Apple if someone is reading: Is this
the normal behaviour I'm experiencing.
You're right Michael, a DV stream should do 25mbps but apparently
bus speed not the bottleneck.
