Getting to your problem, I tried to reproduce it to better understand your
question. On a track, you either insert a patch event, or you are changing the
program number in the track properties, and you would like to hear the effect
of what you're doing, right?
If you insert a patch event, you will have to play the snippet of your track,
so that your patch change comes by, and is received by the synthesizer. After
having played the track portion, you will know if the result was what you
intended.
Next, If you change the patch or program number via the track properties, my
experience is that it is not sent out to the synth as I arrow along to the
desired program number by qws, so also in tthis situation, you have no real
time feedback. Depending on your synthesizer though, there may be a solution. I
don't know if you've seen it already, but qws allows you to create an
instrument list, or use an existing one if it matches your synth. Would it help
you if you saw things like piano, celesta, organ etc instead of just program
numbers? If so, an instrument list will help you some. It is still not a real
time feedback, but you will have an idea of what you are doing.
You know that a patch number changes the instrument you hear. But not all
synthesizers use the same patch numbers for the same instruments. For years
however, there are a few standards that help in this respect. The most commonly
known is the gm standard. G m stands for general midi. If your synthesizer
conforms to the gm standard, it means that, for example, sending it a program
change number 0 results in an acoustic piano sound, while 127 results in a gun
shot. It's the sound. Nothing really happens. All patch numbers in between have
their own fixed instruments assigned in the gm midi standard. A clarinet is
somewhere around 70 I believe, just to mention one. If you want to use an
instrument list and you know that your synth is at least g m compatible, then
qws has one predefined that you can easily start using. Go into the options
menu, and choose instruments. You will have a dialog, where you can tell qws to
which midi output port your synth is currently connected, and which patch list
you would like to use. An instrument list is not just for gm compatible
instruments. There are several synthesizers for which a qws instrument list has
been created already. What is the brand and type of your synth?
Anyway. Once you have your instrument list selected, open the track properties
dialog again and start tabbing. You will notice that previously, you had a list
that was called program, and there you could change the program number on your
track. But now, this list has a different name. It is now called instrument,
rather than program, and this tells you that an instrument list is active here.
If you now start arrowing up and down, you will no longer see numbers like 0 1
2 3 4 etc, but useful instrument names, such as piano, fingered base etc. These
bits of text come from the instrument list. Hope this helps.

But, then again I'm not James, he's the one that would know. Perhaps this
should be added in 1.53?
The only problem is, you wouldn't be able to hear tempo changes and time sig.
What I'd like to see is a way to play a note with a program i.e. if I have to
do a program change, I don't really know the GM layout that well, so I may put
the wrong number in for the program.

I regularly go wrong associating numbers with note pitches in my head, and I'd
like to know if we can press a certain key combination while focus is on an
event, that will send the current event to the track's output port, so that it
can be checked by ear?
